Behind Enemy Lines: The Untold Story of a Green Beret in Afghanistan
In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, the United States launched a global war on terror, sending troops to Afghanistan to topple the Taliban regime and hunt down al-Qaeda. Among the first to deploy was a small team of Green Berets, tasked with carrying out daring missions deep behind enemy lines.
One of those Green Berets was Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. Benavidez and his team were assigned to Operation Enduring Freedom, the initial invasion of Afghanistan. Their mission was to insert into the country, link up with anti-Taliban forces, and call in airstrikes on Taliban positions.

The mission was fraught with danger from the start. The Green Berets were outnumbered and outgunned by the Taliban, and they were operating in a country they knew little about. But Benavidez and his team were determined to succeed, and they pressed on despite the risks.
The Green Berets soon found themselves in the thick of the fighting. They fought their way through Taliban checkpoints, ambushed enemy patrols, and called in airstrikes that destroyed Taliban strongholds. Benavidez was wounded in action several times, but he refused to be evacuated, staying with his team until the mission was complete.
After several weeks of intense fighting, the Green Berets helped to topple the Taliban regime and drive al-Qaeda out of Afghanistan. They had accomplished their mission, but they had also paid a heavy price. Several of their comrades had been killed in action, and many others had been wounded.
Benavidez was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan. He is one of only a handful of living Medal of Honor recipients, and his story is an inspiration to all who serve in the military.
In his book, "Warrior 179," Benavidez tells the full story of his deployment to Afghanistan. He describes the harrowing missions he carried out, the comrades he lost, and the lessons he learned about war and combat.
"Warrior 179" is a must-read for anyone interested in the war in Afghanistan, special operations, or the life of a Green Beret. It is a gripping account of one man's courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to his country.
