The Early Years

The NGE was founded on March 18, 1961, at a meeting of editors from all over Nigeria. The meeting was held at the Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos, and was chaired by Ernest Ikoli, the editor of the Daily Times. The NGE's first president was Ayo Ojewumi, the editor of the West African Pilot.

In its early years, the NGE faced many challenges. The organization was underfunded and lacked a permanent secretariat. However, the NGE's members were determined to make the organization a success. They worked tirelessly to promote journalism ethics and standards, and to defend press freedom.

The NGE and the Struggle for Independence

The NGE played a significant role in the struggle for Nigeria's independence from British colonial rule. The organization's members used their newspapers and magazines to mobilize support for independence, and to denounce the excesses of the colonial government.

After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the NGE continued to play an important role in the country's development. The organization's members helped to shape Nigeria's new constitution, and they worked to promote unity and reconciliation among the country's different ethnic groups.

The NGE and the Military Regimes

Nigeria has experienced a number of military coups since independence. The NGE has often been critical of military rule, and the organization's members have been subjected to harassment and intimidation by the authorities.

Despite the challenges, the NGE has remained a strong advocate for press freedom and democracy in Nigeria. The organization's members have continued to use their newspapers and magazines to hold the government to account, and to promote the rule of law.

The NGE Today

Today, the NGE is a respected and influential organization. The organization has over 500 members, and it is represented on a number of national and international bodies.

The NGE continues to play a vital role in the development of journalism in Nigeria. The organization's members are committed to promoting journalism ethics and standards, and to defending press freedom.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors is a proud and storied organization. The NGE has played a pivotal role in the development of journalism in Nigeria, and the organization continues to be a strong advocate for press freedom and democracy.

The NGE's story is a testament to the power of journalism to make a difference in the world. The organization's members are dedicated to using their voices to speak truth to power, and to promote a more just and equitable society.
