The Light Division was designed to be a highly mobile and flexible force, capable of operating independently of the main army. The division's soldiers were armed with the Baker rifle, a new weapon that was more accurate and longer-ranged than the standard infantry musket. The division also had a strong emphasis on skirmishing, a form of fighting in which small groups of soldiers fought in loose formation, using cover and concealment to their advantage.

The Light Division first saw action in the Peninsular War in 1808, when it was sent to Portugal to help defend the country against the French invasion. The division played a key role in several key battles, including the Battle of Roliça, the Battle of Vimeiro, and the Battle of Corunna.

In 1809, the Light Division was sent to Spain to join the main British army under the command of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. The division fought in a number of major battles during the Peninsular War, including the Battle of Talavera, the Battle of Bussaco, and the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro.

The Light Division's performance in the Peninsular War was exemplary. The division's soldiers were known for their courage, discipline, and skill in skirmishing. The division also played a key role in several key victories, helping to drive the French out of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Light Division in Action

The Light Division was involved in a number of key battles during the Peninsular War. One of the most famous of these battles was the Battle of Talavera, which took place in July 1809. The Light Division played a key role in the British victory at Talavera, repulsing several French attacks and capturing a number of French guns.

Another key battle in which the Light Division fought was the Battle of Bussaco, which took place in September 1810. The Light Division helped to hold the French at bay at Bussaco, preventing them from breaking through into Portugal.

The Light Division also played a key role in the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro, which took place in May 1811. The Light Division helped to repulse a French attack on the British lines, and also captured a number of French guns.

The Legacy of the Light Division

The Light Division was one of the most elite infantry formations in the British Army during the Peninsular War. The division's soldiers were known for their courage, discipline, and skill in skirmishing.
