Early Life and Education

Nikolai Ivanovich Kibalchich was born on October 19, 1853, in the village of Korop, Chernigov Governorate, Russian Empire. He was the son of a priest, and he received a traditional Russian Orthodox education. In 1873, Kibalchich enrolled in the Saint Petersburg Institute of Technology, where he studied engineering. He was a brilliant student, and he graduated with honors in 1878.

Revolutionary Activities

After graduating from the Institute of Technology, Kibalchich became involved in revolutionary activities. He joined the Narodnaya Volya (People's Will) party, a radical organization that advocated for the overthrow of the Tsarist government. Kibalchich was responsible for organizing several terrorist attacks, including the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881.

Work on Rocketry

In addition to his revolutionary activities, Kibalchich was also a talented inventor. While in prison awaiting execution, he developed a design for a rocket-powered flying machine. This design was published in 1881, and it is considered to be one of the first scientific papers on rocketry.

Kibalchich's rocket design was based on the principle of action and reaction. He proposed using a solid fuel propellant to generate thrust, and he designed a nozzle to accelerate the exhaust gases. His design also included a system for controlling the rocket's flight.
