A Call To Action
This book tells the untold story of how farmworkers and environmentalists came together to fight for pesticide reform in California. It is a story of courage, determination, and the power of social change.
Farmworkers are some of the most vulnerable people in our society. They are often exposed to dangerous pesticides and other chemicals on the job. These exposures can lead to a variety of health problems, including cancer, reproductive problems, and developmental disFree Downloads.
Environmentalists are also concerned about the dangers of pesticides. Pesticides can contaminate our air, water, and soil. They can also harm wildlife and damage ecosystems.
In the early 1990s, farmworkers and environmentalists joined forces to fight for pesticide reform in California. They formed a coalition called the California Pesticide Action Network (CalPAN). CalPAN worked to raise awareness of the dangers of pesticides and to promote safer alternatives.
CalPAN's efforts were successful. In 1999, California passed the Pesticide Use Reduction Act (PURA). PURA was the first law in the nation to require farmers to reduce their pesticide use. PURA has helped to reduce pesticide use in California by more than 50%. Pesticides are still a threat to farmworkers and environmentalists. Cancer: Pesticides have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, and brain cancer. Reproductive problems: Pesticides have been linked to reproductive problems, including infertility, birth defects, and miscarriage. Developmental disFree Downloads: Pesticides have been linked to developmental disFree Downloads, including autism and ADHD.
But CalPAN's work is not done. The coalition continues to fight for stronger pesticide regulations and to promote safer alternatives. The Cooperative Campaigns Of Farmworkers And Environmentalists For Pesticide is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about the dangers of pesticides and who wants to make a difference in the fight for a safer environment.
