The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC),the influential pro-Israel lobby, has been a major player in American politics for decades. But how did AIPAC become such a powerful force? The answer lies in the tireless efforts of its founder, Isaiah Kenen.

Kenen the Strategist

Isaiah Kenen was born in Russia in 1905 and immigrated to the United States in 1920. He soon became involved in Zionist activities and in 1942, he co-founded the American Zionist Emergency Council (AZEC),which later evolved into AIPAC.

Kenen was a brilliant strategist who understood the importance of building relationships with members of Congress. He also recognized the power of grassroots organizing, and he spent years cultivating a network of pro-Israel activists across the country.

The Birth of AIPAC

In 1951, Kenen and a group of other Jewish leaders founded AIPAC. The organization's mission was to educate Congress and the public about Israel and to advocate for policies that supported the Jewish state.

AIPAC quickly gained influence in Washington. Kenen's personal relationships with members of Congress gave AIPAC a direct line to decision-makers. And the organization's grassroots network generated a flood of letters, phone calls, and visits to Capitol Hill.

The Early Years

AIPAC's early years were marked by a series of high-profile successes. The organization played a key role in securing US support for Israel's independence in 1948. And in 1956, AIPAC helped to defeat a resolution that would have condemned Israel for its invasion of Egypt.

However, AIPAC also faced some setbacks. In 1967, the organization was criticized for its support of Israel's pre-emptive strike against Egypt, which launched the Six-Day War. And in 1973, AIPAC was accused of being too close to the Nixon administration, which was embroiled in the Watergate scandal.

The Modern Era

Despite these setbacks, AIPAC continued to grow in power and influence. In the 1980s, the organization played a key role in securing US support for Israel's invasion of Lebanon. And in the 1990s, AIPAC helped to pass legislation that imposed sanctions on Iran.

In recent years, AIPAC has become increasingly involved in domestic politics. The organization has been criticized for its support of certain Republican candidates and for its opposition to the Iran nuclear deal.

Isaiah Kenen's legacy is a powerful one. He founded an organization that has been a major force in American politics for decades. AIPAC's success is a testament to Kenen's strategic brilliance and his tireless dedication to the cause of Israel.
